CAD MODELER/DESIGNER
The CAD Modeler is responsible for creating accurately scaled 3-D computer models of solids and surfaces of products/assemblies. In the case of composite part models, Vectorworks will subsequently machine using the CNC mill. In the case of mechanical components, these will often be used to develop a 3-D model of a machinery space or the living space in a boat. In both cases these models will be used to determine space relationships between parts and assemblies. The CAD Modeler also develops detailed 2-D construction drawings showing arrangements, installation and alignment details for boats and their systems.
Primary Job Duties:
-Assist naval architects and marine engineers in designing and integrating a very wide range of shipboard structures and machinery including propulsion, electrical, power generation, hydraulics and water services systems for pleasure boats and luxury yachts.
-Design and prepare detailed electronic CAD working plans, layouts and / or scale drawings for complex projects from observation, measurements, sketches and specifications.
-Prepare electronic layouts, charts, detailed scale drawings, and material and equipment requirements from sketches, specifications, and standard layouts provided by customers, consultants, and / or departmental contacts; review and manipulate electronic files received from consultants and departmental contacts.
-Develop 3-D models of components and surfaces under the supervision of the designer and engineer.
-Takes a conceptual design and translates it into buildable components depicted on 2-D drawings.
-Interface with departmental personnel to obtain details of equipment and materials requirements and / or select and source components and hardware.
-Make basic computations to determine quantities for BOMs, weight of materials, and requirements for structural design.
-Maintain spreadsheet design databases such as weight studies, electrical load lists, electrical cable route sheets, etc.
-Liaison with the production crew during prototype fabrication and outfitting.
Required Training and Experience:
-Knowledge of surface modeling in following 3-D and 2-D CAD software:
- Siemens NX (Unigraphics) – fluency a must.
- AutoCAD LT – basic knowledge required
- Rhinoceros – basic knowledge a plus
-Work with blueprints, schematics, and sketches
-Knowledge of naval architecture and marine engineering is a definite plus
Physical Requirements:
Able to wear protective eyewear and work in a non-climate controlled environment as needed when job duties require a visit to the shop floor; able to work in a non-climate controlled environment.
